The National Board for Certified Counselors International (NBCC-International) was founded in 2003 by the Board of Directors of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) in response to increasing requests by international colleagues for collaboration in credential development and counseling professionalization mechanisms.
NBCC-International promotes the strengthening of the counseling profession and highlights counseling needs worldwide.
NBCC-International mission encompasses:
- Quality assurance in counseling practice;
- The value of culturally sensitive counseling;
- Public awareness of quality;
- Professionalism in counseling; and
- Leadership in credentialing.
NBCC-International works closely with the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) and EBCC on international partnerships in credential development and cooperation in developing and sustaining NBCC national offices worldwide. This cooperation serves to merge international partners’ knowledge of local contexts with NBCC’s expertise.
NBCC-International has co-authored a publication with the World Health Organization (WHO) and consulted with WHO on NBCC-International Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program. Thanks in part to NBCC-International work, NBCC was recognized as a nongovernmental organization in operational relations by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
